Over the course of the year 2022, the 61 Foundation chose to assist in providing funding for medical surgeries, career assistance and donations in kind (laptops) for a few Calabar old boys and/or parents. This was done as part of the Foundation’s mandate to focus on local communities in need, especially in the case of youth.
In late 2021, the 61 Foundation was made aware of the sub-standard condition of a boarding house located at Calabar High School specifically designated for Calabar High School student-athletes focused on track and field. Due to the urgency of the problem, the Foundation undertook the “Track House Project”.
This ongoing endeavor has thus far raised approximately US $15,000 and with the aid of a local contractor, has thus far completed renovation of the bathrooms, kitchen, plumbing and drainage systems of the boarding house.
In addition, the Foundation took on the additional responsibility of providing mentorship and general oversight of the 22 student-athletes who resided in the boarding house during 2022/23.
Providing funding and sourcing the appropriate medications for recent Calabar graduate ( Bryan Pindling ) for treatment of Crohn’s disease.
It came to the attention of the Foundation early in 2022 that Bryan, formerly a very active and social student athlete, was having extreme difficulties managing the effects of his ailment, So an immediate effort was made to render support and assistance to Bryan and his family.
The results thus far have been extremely positive, as Bryan has been able to begin tertiary studies and with the help of continued medical treatment has resumed his regular active lifestyle.
Sourcing, financing, and dispensing of scientific calculators and geometry sets to aid in the academic instruction of one 7th grade class Math class at Calabar High School.
After receiving a plea for help from a concerned teacher at the school, the 61 Foundation mobilized and was able to quickly provide the requested materials.
Providing funding for the academic evaluation of an incoming student athlete.
After concerns were raised regarding the academic standing of a prominent Calabar High School football and track athlete, the 61 Foundation in coordination with the school’s guidance counsellor (Ms. Jarrett), planned for and funded an official academic evaluation.
This enabled a structured and formal remediation plan to be enacted for the student in question.
*The 61 Foundation sponsored the Calabar High School Football Summer Camp of 2022, where approximately 20 student athletes took part in daily training in preparation for the upcoming 2022/23 schoolboy football season.
The summer camp took place over the course of two (2) weeks and was instrumental in providing a solid foundation for the coach and players to build upon for the rest of the season.
*Sponsoring the Calabar High School Debate Team and aiding their preparation for the inter-school debate competition by donating a new Windows laptop to assist the team members.
*The 61 Foundation paid for the tuition of a Calabar graduate in need of assistance.
This graduate had already been accepted to a local Teacher’s College and seeing the dedication and willingness to devote himself to the noble profession of teaching and giving back to his own community,
the Foundation decided to sponsor said Calabar grad.
